2018 the fourth-hottest year in history

But consider the context: The hottest five years on record are, in fact, the last five years. The last five years-from 2014 to 2018-are the warmest years ever recorded in the 139 years that NOAA has tracked global heat. Deathly record lows are real in the U.S., but don't be fooled by the cooling that we have been witnessing, global warming is real also.

Global temperatures rose 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit (0.83 degrees Celsius) than the mean of warming from 1951 to 1980. Such cold weather has made it really hard for many to believe that global warming is real.

The Earth's temperature in 2018 was more than one degree Celsius, or 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit, above the average temperature of the late 19th century, when humans started pumping large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

"The impacts of long-term global warming are already being felt - in coastal flooding, heat waves, intense precipitation and ecosystem change", Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, said in a statement.

NASA and NOAA independently monitor the Earth's surface temperatures and changes based on observations of both land areas and oceans, using a network of satellites scattered in Earth orbit. Indeed, that natural variation is why climate scientists look primarily at temperature trends over long timescales and don't give too much significance to a single hot or cold year.

Sharon Osbourne supports Ariana Grande snubbing the Grammys
They wrapped up the tweet with a quote from the song, "It's like you're the universe and we're N-A-S-A". Right now, it's not looking promising but there are still a couple of days to pull off a miracle.

Last year was also the third wettest on record in the U.S. Nine eastern states had their wettest years on record, "an exclamation point on a trend of big rain" in the age of climate change, Arndt said.

If a warming planet were an Olympic sport, fourth wouldn't make the podium.

Yet Trump has dismissed the threat of climate change, including a landmark assessment by 13 federal agencies last fall that found climate change is inflicting increasing damage to the nation's environment, health and economy. Instead, his administration is working to unravel Obama-era environmental rules in favor of policies that would allow more greenhouse gas emissions from cars, trucks and coal-fired power plants.

Dr. Schmidt spoke of these markers not as cliffs that the world would plunge over, however, but part of a continuing slide toward increasing levels of harm.

Government shutdowns can delay the collection and timely release of important scientific information, as was the case with the information released today.
