Amazon may end NYC headquarters plans due to backlash

Boxes move down a conveyor belt at an Amazon fulfillment center

Executives have had internal discussions about whether to proceed with the NY plan or explore alternatives, the Washington Post reported, citing two sources familiar with the company's thinking.

The Citibank building, the site of a new workplace for Amazon employees, is seen in Long Island City of the Queens borough of NY, U.S., November 14, 2018.

But another source familiar with Amazon's thinking disputed the report, telling The New York Times, "I think that's a bit far in my opinion".

Cuomo defended the deal on Friday as the largest economic development the state had ever won and cited the Post story. The company said it will receive performance-based incentives of $1.525 billion from the state of NY, including an average $48,000 for each job it creates.

Cuomo admitted that the community surrounding the site is "nervous", but he says the 25,000 jobs that Amazon has promised to create are worth any inconvenience.

Amazon in November selected two locations for its HQ2 project, Long Island City, Queens, and Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia, with each expected to land 25,000 well-paid jobs. This will include a refundable tax credit, through the state's Excelsior Program, of up to $1.2 billion over the next 10 years.

Protestors rally against Amazon and the company's plans to move their second headquarters to the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens, at New York City Hall, January 30, 2019 in New York City.

And not everyone has jumped to lay out the welcome mat. Michael Gianaris and New York City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer.

Several of them, including "the 78", enticed Amazon enough to get two site visits. While he has yet to be confirmed, his position on the board would allow him to scrap Amazon's HQ2 deal.

Among other things, Amazon said it would hire from "across the five boroughs", offer career training for local residents and bring in over $27 billion in state and local tax revenue that can help "improve subways and buses". He notes Google is coming to the city without a massive incentive package. Council Speaker Corey Johnson criticized Amazon last week for pitting workers against one another.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez commented on the report via Twitter and said, "Can everyday people come together and effectively organize against creeping overreach of one of the world's biggest corporations?"

"No one knows for sure if (the article) is true, and Amazon has been pretty tight-lipped on if they have wandering eyes", the source said.

Alphabet Inc's Google said in December it would invest more than $1 billion on a new campus in NY, becoming the second major technology company to pick America's financial capital to expand and create thousands of jobs. "I was elected to advocate for our community's interests - and they've requested, clearly, to voice their concerns".

Though, both the governor and the mayor continue to fully support the deal to bring the tech giant to New York City. "We get US$27 billion in revenue, they get US$3 billion back - I would do that all day long".

On the other hand, Amazon has significant backing in the form of Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio.
