Charges: Suspect Fired 5 Times at School Bus Windshield

A suspect identified as Kenneth W. Lilly 31 is seen firing shots in a video released Wednesday by the Minnesota Department of Transportation

Paul faces one count of second-degree attempted murder and one count of second-degree assault in connection to the shooting of the bus driver Tuesday.

Police say that the alleged gunman, Kenneth W. Lilly, 31, was driving on the I-35 freeway at around 2:30 p.m. when his auto made contact with the school bus, which was chartered for Minneapolis Public Schools.

Lilly is expected to make his first court appearance on Friday.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation released footage Wednesday of a suspected gunman shooting at a school bus driver in an apparent road-rage incident on Tuesday.

After firing the shots, Lilly called 911.

Police said 31-year-old Kenneth Lilly fired five shots at the 78-year-old school bus driver who bumped his vehicle on an icy interstate, hitting him in the head and arm.

"The filing of the complaint tells you that we do not believe there was a self-defense claim based upon the evidence we have received so far", Chief Deputy Hennepin County Attorney David Brown told reporters. An 8-year-old girl on the bus was not injured.

The shooter's employer said they've never had an incident with Lilly.

After the two vehicles made contact, the drivers pulled over on the highway's shoulder, police say. The company's president, Troy Nadeau, said he doesn't know where the violent behavior came from, adding that Lilly "had a clean file", and was "a good guy who was always on time".

Officials said the bus driver stayed awake as he was taken to a nearby hospital and is doing OK. He walked to the passenger door and reportedly tried to get onto the bus.

His gunfire grazed the side of the driver's head and struck his left arm.

Lilly later told officers that he feared for his life, and said that is why he shot the bus driver, according to the complaint.
