Pelosi says she would accept bipartisan border-security deal

The US President Trump has been struggling to obtain $5.7 billion in funding for border security and the construction of a wall on the border with Mexico, which is meant to stop illegal immigration.

Pelosi told reporters that she believes the House and Senate negotiators could reach a deal by the end of this week if "left to their own devices".

When President Donald Trump was arguing in favor of a U.S./Mexico border wall during his 2019 State of the Union speech, he cited El Paso, Texas as an example of the safety a wall can bring-and according to El Paso County Sheriff Richard Wiles, Trump's comments were totally misleading.

While there is no mention of the wall in the preview, Trump did however save his first tweet Tuesday morning emphasizing the need for a barrier, possibly a human one.

Let's face it, this week's State of the Union address was so chalk full of lies, exaggerations and misrepresentations that bestowing the title of Alternative Fact of the Week is a fool's errand. "The fact of the matter is that El Paso and most of the cities on the U.S. -Mexico border boast among the safest crime statistics in the entire country", Jon Barela, chief executive of the Borderplex Alliance, told the Post.

Trump appealed Tuesday night for bipartisanship but refused to yield on the hard-line immigration policies that have infuriated Democrats and forced the recent government shutdown.

"We're going to have them up before the appropriations conference committee, and we are going to find out what they want", said Shelby to CNN news.

Wiles continued, "The facts are clear: while it is true that El Paso is one of the safest cities in the nation, it has never been 'considered one of our nation's most risky cities.' And, El Paso was a safe city long before any wall was built".

Funding for a number of government agencies will expire on February 15. The Security Secretary for Coahuila, Jose Luis Pliego Corona reportedly wants the USA to know that Mexican officials are doing everything possible to identify and remove any criminal threat in the group.

Escobar also recommended that during Trump's visit to El Paso on Monday for his campaign rally that the president speak to a family seeking asylum in the United States. Few people dispute that barriers contributed to sharp declines in illegal border crossings in El Paso and other border communities. By 2010 after the wall was built, El Paso's murder rate had dropped to 0.9 for every 100,000 residents, compared with a national average of 4.8. The city's Republican mayor, Dee Margo, said he's looking forward to the president's visit, but tweeted that El Paso was "NEVER one of the most unsafe cities" in the nation.

"I am asking you to defend our very unsafe southern border out of love and devotion to our fellow citizens and to our country", he said, painting a dark and foreboding picture of the risks posed to Americans by illegal immigration.
