U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren enters 2020 presidential race

Elizabeth Warren officially launches 2020 presidential campaign - live updates

There were some in Ms Warren's campaign kick-off crowd who expressed concern that her struggles to explain her past claims of Native American heritage could make her vulnerable to attack.

Warren's announcement makes her the eighth Democrat officially running for president, joining the likes of Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey, former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro, Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, Senator Kamala Harris of California, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of NY, former Congressman John Delaney of Maryland, Spiritual author Marianne Williamson of Texas and businessman Andrew Yang of NY.

"Democratic voters have said in polls that their primary concern leading up to 2020 is selecting a candidate who can defeat Trump, and they're anxious that just as Trump was able to use Hilary Clinton's emails scandals and blow that into a big thing that was very damaging to her campaign, that he may use this claim of Elizabeth Warren's Native American ancestry as her Achilles' heel".

"The man in the White House is not the cause of what is broken".

The Massachusetts Democrat, a leader of the party's progressive wing, made her announcement from a historic site in Lawrence, northwest of Boston, that launched the USA organized labor movement.

Warren has two children from a marriage prior to her 1980 union with husband Bruce Mann, a Harvard law professor. Her past claims to Native American heritage, including a controversial DNA test to prove she had distant Native American ancestry, landed her in hot water with the Cherokee Nation.

The campaign's decision to stage the senator's first campaign rally in Lawrence, a former industrial mill town, highlights the key constituency groups she hopes to appeal to in her campaign, including immigrants, women, working class families and union members.

Warren also apologized Wednesday afternoon for claiming she was of "American Indian" origin in a Texas Bar registration card from 1986.

As supporters cheered and clapped, she also said on Saturday, "I'm opting out ..."

"These workers - led by women - didn't have much".

Ms Warren said in an interview with CNN in the summer of 2018: "I think we need immigration laws that focus on people who pose a real threat and I don't think moms and babies are the place that we should be spending our resources". She announced last month her plan to impose a "wealth tax" on Americans with more than $50 million in assets. She's long advocated for more aggressive action to combat climate change and for higher taxes for the nation's wealthiest. Billionaires would pay an additional 1%. Warren did not address the potential for another distracting revelation when asked by reporters on Capitol Hill this week.

Ms Warren has apologised for taking the test.

That challenge is on display this weekend as Democratic presidential contenders - or those considering a run - fan out across the crucial early-voting states. She should decline to announce her candidacy.

And Warren's launch comes at a challenging moment for the 69-year-old senator.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
