Political giant John Dingell dies at 92

"John Dingell's life reminds us that change does not always come with a flash, but instead with steady, determined effort", Obama said in a statement on Thursday night. She was absent during President Donald Trump's State of the Union address in Washington, DC, on Tuesday evening.

Dingell, who died Thursday at age 92, didn't mention Trump by name in the article.

"John Dingell was a giant legislator on behalf of the people", said House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer. But it wasn't his first time on the House floor - as a teen, the Democrat had served as a congressional page.

"I've gotten more death threats around here than I can remember", Dingell told The Associated Press in a 1995 interview. At Georgetown University, he earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1949 and a law degree three years later.

In December 1955, at 29, Dingell won a special election to succeed his father, who had died three months earlier, in his 12th term. "I was a working-class kid from a Polish neighbourhood in Detroit, and this was quite an event for me", Dingell told Time magazine at the time. The former congressman was first elected to the House in 1955, a seat formerly held by his father, John Dingell, Sr.
