Fears for 30 trapped in rubble of fallen Istanbul flats

Istanbul collapse

The death toll from the collapse of an eight-story building in Istanbul rose to 10 on Thursday, while 13 others were injured, the governor's office for the Turkish city said, as rescuers worked around the clock looking for more survivors.

At least three people were killed when a seven-story building on Istanbul's Asian side collapsed, authorities said Wednesday.

Turkish emergency services have rescued a 5-year-old girl from the debris of an eight-storey apartment building in Istanbul about 18 hours after it collapsed.

He added that the top three floors of the building were built illegally.

It comes after Turkey's emergency management agency, AFAD, warned in August that up to 30,000 people could be killed in Istanbul if a magnitude-7.5 natural disaster hit, with an estimated collapse of 44,802 buildings.

"We will work without interruption until the search and rescue operation is complete", Yerlikaya, the governor, told reporters.

The space agency is hoping one or both of the crew capsules will be certified as safe to fly by the end of this year. SpaceX also completed a pad abort test in 2015.

CCTV footage on HaberTurk local television showed several people, including schoolchildren with backpacks, running away from the site as the building tumbled down and a cloud of dust engulfed the area.

At least three people have been found dead in the rubble, and 13 people - including Tekgoz - have been rescued.

Rescuers carry an injured woman on a stretcher from the site of a collapsed building in Kartal district of Istanbul, Turkey.

'We rushed out as soon as we heard a loud noise.

The incident was a stark reminder of the fragility of parts of Istanbul's residential infrastructure, with several buildings collapsing in recent years. It reported that Turkey's broadcasting watchdog declared that Istanbul's prosecutor's office had ordered the blackout and reasoned that the coverage will only hinder the investigations.
