Rice, who won BBC One's singing competition All Together Now's £50,000 prize past year, added that his track "might just be a ballad but that song's got a big message and I can't wait to perform it and show the rest of the world what this song's all about".

It's the first time the Australian public has been allowed to decide who represents them at the global song contest, which will take place in Israel in May.

"I'm totally overwhelmed! This has been a peak experience already, and I'm dying with excitement at what's to come", she said of her win.

Miller-Heidke topped Saturday's scoreboard, narrowly beating electronic group Electric Fields. I've had a ball, and I'm so grateful and thrilled that I get to represent Australia at Eurovision'.

Meanwhile, indie pop band Sheppard came in third place during the live decider, with professional judges and the general public having equal sway in the decision.

He was selected during Eurovision: You Decide on BBC Two after making the final three decided by a panel of judges and then winning the public vote.

Last year's United Kingdom entrant SuRie finished 24th out of 26 in the Eurovision song contest after a stage invader interrupted her performance by grabbing the mic and shouting slogans about the media.

"Kate's performance tonight was quite simply breathtaking and the response from the Australian public has been overwhelming", he said.

Fans said they feel the song could be a victor at Eurovision in May.

Jessica Mauboy performed at the event in 2014 as an interval act.
