PSG's Cavani doubtful for Man United game

Edinson Cavani PSG Bordeaux Ligue 1 09022019

PSG boss Thomas Tuchel has suggested that Edison Cavani won't play in this week's Champions League Round of 16 tie with Manchester United.

PSG beat Bordeaux 1-0 to increase its lead in the French league to 13 points over second-placed Lille, which plays on Sunday.

The French champions face Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's resurgent side at Old Trafford in the first leg on Tuesday. He left the pitch moments later and was replaced by Kylian Mbappe at half-time.

"No, I don't have good news for you", Tuchel told Canal +. "We do not have another Edi, we do not have another Neymar".

"Our game against Manchester United needs to be beefier, stronger, with a different attitude".

PSG will also be missing Brazil striker, Neymar, who has been ruled out with a foot injury.

Tuchel said there was good news for another of his key players, midfielder Marco Verratti who started against Bordeaux after three weeks out with an ankle problem.

Such is their margin for error domestically that Tuchel could afford to wrap a host of key players in cotton wool with the Champions League in mind.

Bordeaux held PSG at home when the teams met in December, but they were undone late in the first half here as Nicolas de Preville fouled Thomas Meunier in the box, and Cavani netted from 12 yards. "If we are missing lots of key players, it's an even bigger challenge, but we will be ready on Tuesday, I think". Verratti played nearly an hour before being substituted by Leandro Paredes.

When United were initially pitted against Les Parisiens, very few gave them the chance, given their struggles to garner regular wins under ex-boss Jose Mourinho.

Juventus spent €112 million on a 33-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo in July to take them one step further after reaching the final in 2015 and 2017, when Ronaldo scored twice in a 4-1 win for Madrid.
