Stop using Internet Explorer, warns Microsoft's own security chief

Internet Explorer

Microsoft Worldwide Lead for Application Compatibility Chris Jackson said this week that IE isn't really a browser but a "compatibility solution" to deal with legacy sites. However, Microsoft kept Internet Explorer around for businesses as a compatibility option, not as a browser for everyday use.

Microsoft has a past with web browsers and as you might know, the company is not proud of that.

We are not supporting new web standards for this, while many sites work excellent, large and developers are not experimenting and testing for Internet Explorer these days.

Mr. Jackson in a blog post warned that companies using Internet Explorer are taking on a "technical debt" to pay for support on old software and could end up using "a 1999 implementation of web standards" if they didn't take all the necessary measures to update it when creating new web pages.

Microsoft wants users to stop surfing the web on Internet Explorer.

But not Internet Explorer.

US officer at border crossing shoots driver going to Mexico
Mexican border officials surrounded the truck and discovered the driver was dead, and arrested a passenger. Illegal crossings in that area have dropped steeply in recent years.

The main and the most valid reason that Microsoft gives to change web browser is that they think Internet Explorer users are possibly missing out on a lot of experiences that are not customized to the browser. That said, it's an important reminder for everyone to use a modern-day browser.

Because IE isn't even considered by a growing majority of web developers, people and businesses using the browser to access modern websites are at an inherent disadvantage.

Microsoft's replacement for Internet Explorer, Edge, has performed abysmally in terms of market share, thanks in no small part to its youth leading to a limited ecosystem of extensions. Worse, Edge isn't available on Windows 7 or 8, meaning the systems many companies rely on don't have access to Microsoft's latest browser.

The Verge that Microsoft helped exacerbate the problem by coupling its current web browser, Edge, with Windows 10, limiting its ability to be used on older versions of Windows. However, old habits do die hard and the same goes with Internet Explorer.

"If we continued our previous approach, you would end up in a scenario where, by optimizing for the things you have, you end up not being able to use new apps as they come out", Jackson says.
