Storm Erik: Kitesurfer dies and travellers face disruption across UK

UK weather Storm Erik on its way to Britain as yellow warning for 60mph winds issued England and Scotland

According to flight tracking website FlightAware, the flight British Airways 276 that took off from Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport arrived at London Heathrow on Friday after a delay of 18 minutes.

The warning reads: "Despite the strongest of the winds associated with Storm Erik being across the north-west of the United Kingdom today, a swathe of strong south-westerly winds will bring gusts 50-60 miles per hour to southern counties of England, initially across south-west England, but then affecting areas further east this afternoon". It has now landed safely at Manchester.

The storm has already caused high wind speeds across the country, with wind reaching 84mph in parts of Wales yesterday.

It is also believed that two deaths have been caused by the storm so far - both of which occurred when the weather affected driving conditions.

A 50-year-old man died on the A384 in Buckfastleigh, Devon and a van driver was killed after colliding with a fallen tree on the B4306 between Pontyberem and Llannon in west Wales.

US officer at border crossing shoots driver going to Mexico
Mexican border officials surrounded the truck and discovered the driver was dead, and arrested a passenger. Illegal crossings in that area have dropped steeply in recent years.

Parts of the country could also experience hail and thunder.

"We are still urging people that if they see any damage to our overhead power lines please stay away and report it to us straight away so we can fix it safely".

"They're going to have very strong winds. We could therefore see some further problems on roads".

A yellow weather warning for strong wind until 3pm covered much of Wales, central and northern England and southern Scotland, with a separate yellow warning for northern Scotland that said flooding could follow heavy rains.

Are you prepared for the bad weather?
