Twitter's ad revenues soar but its user growth issues loom large

Twitter says it has 126 million daily users

The company says it will no longer disclose MAUs after the first quarter of 2019. Analysts, on average, projected $766.1 million, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

All of that came alongside Twitter's announcement on Thursday that it's changing its user metrics in earnings releases. The company's share of the lucrative market is expected to decline this year as rivals like Facebook Inc. and Alphabet Inc.'s Google boost their dominance, according to EMarketer.

The company also posted another profitable quarter, its fifth consecutive period of profitability.Twitter brought in $909 million in revenue for the fourth quarter, up 24 percent from a year earlier, with a profit of $255 million, well more than double what it made during the same period in 2017. The company also announced it earned $3 billion in revenue past year, a 25 percent increase from 2017.

Twitter said it had 126 million mDAUs in the fourth quarter, up from 124 million in the third quarter and 120 million in the first quarter.

Now, a big reason for Twitter seeing less daily active users than other companies is likely from the company purging a number of bot accounts. For good measure, Twitter has renamed daily active users as "monetisable daily active users" and will stop disclosing monthly active users after the first quarter of this year.

By region, average U.S. MAU in the quarter was down 3 percent from past year to 66 million.

Twitter's decision to jettison reporting monthly users fits a recent trend of major tech companies tweaking their reporting practices.

Despite its lackluster user growth, Twitter's financial health improved after years of losses. In its fourth-quarter 2018 earnings, Twitter revealed it has 126 million "monetisable" daily users, up from about 115 million a year ago.

$900m drug bust exposes Mexico-Australia cartel ties
The drugs were packaged with smaller quantities of cocaine and heroin, and were concealed in metal boxes labeled as loudspeakers. The bust was the largest amount of methamphetamine ever seized in the United States, according to police.

"We will cont. our efforts to remove spammy + suspicious accts. from our service + to prevent their creation in service of a healthier public conversation", it said.

For the current quarter, Twitter said it expected total revenue to be between $715 million and $775 million. The company said costs grew primarily because of hiring and expenses related to video content and infrastructure.

Twitter defines monetizable daily active usage or users (mDAU) as Twitter users who logged in or were otherwise authenticated and accessed Twitter on any given day through twitter.com or Twitter applications that are able to show ads.

That compares to Facebook's 1.5 billion daily users and Snapchat's 186 million.

Twitter is a small part of the digital advertising market that's dominated by Facebook and Google.

Shares were down more than 10 percent at $30.56 in midday trading.

Twitter lost another 5 million users during the fourth quarter of 2018 but surpassed Wall Street's sales and revenue expectations when the company reported its Q4 results on Thursday morning.
