UEFA President Ceferin Re-Elected, Says He Won't Be FIFA 'Yes Man'

Gianni Infantino

Speaking at the 43rd UEFA Congress in Rome on Thursday morning, UEFA chief Aleksander Ceferin stood up to FIFA's Gianni Infantino, asserting he was not a "yes-man".

"Building on their close cooperation over the last eleven years, the memorandum outlines the strong willingness of Uefa and ECA to continue to work together with mutual trust and clarity of objectives to ensure the well-being and stability of European football", Uefa said.

His most notable achievements have been introducing term limits for UEFA presidents - to a maximum of three four-year stints - and, according to one of those close to him, "maintaining unity in European football".

The row over FIFA's controversial plans for a new Club World Cup and global Nations League has intensified, after UEFA's president pulled no punches in a searing attack on the proposals in front of his counterpart.

Ceferin, 51, said the meeting had been held in Frankfurt on Monday with the 16 coaches of the sides left in the Champions League.

"I don't know what competitions there will be in two years, four years, ten years but we didn't get any more information that we had in Bogota in March", Ceferin told reporters after UEFA's annual Congress.

"By respecting the football pyramid, by respecting our sport's institutions and history, by respecting the principle of competitions that are open to everyone, without exception, by respecting the promotion and relegation system that lies at the heart of our sporting culture.you remain great clubs in the world's eyes".

Ceferin excused Liverpool from attending as they were playing a Premier League match at West Ham on Monday, which ended 1-1 at London Stadium.

He is completing the term of Sepp Blatter, who was banned from Federation Internationale de Football Association for financial irregularities with Michel Platini, Infantino's former boss at UEFA.

Ceferin said while he leads UEFA and Agnelli heads the influential European Club Association "there will be no Super League".
