Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax calls for investigation into sexual assault allegations

Virginia Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax presides over the Senate at the Virginia State Capitol

A former Duke University student has accused Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax of sexual assault. Bass said that both Mr. Northam and Mr. Fairfax should step down.

What does she say and he say?

A second woman came forward Friday to accuse Virginia Lt. Gov.

Earlier this week, a college professor accused Fairfax of assaulting her at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. "She turned and asked: "Why did you do it?' Mr. Fairfax answered: 'I knew that because of what happened to you past year, you'd be too afraid to say anything.' Mr. Fairfax actually used the prior rape of his 'friend" against her when he chose to rape her in a premeditated way".

"I believe and trust that due process will provide the fairness, justice and honesty that is necessary", Fairfax said in a statement on Saturday. "I want to stand here in that truth and restate that my truth, as well as the truth of Dr. Tyson and Ms. Watson, should be fully investigated and thoroughly assessed", Fairfax's statement said, also calling on the FBI to "investigate fully and thoroughly the allegations against me".

"I will clear my good name and I have nothing to hide", Fairfax wrote, and declared: "I will not resign".

"I have passed two full field background checks by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and run for office in two highly contested elections with nothing like this being raised before".

"It is obvious that a vicious and coordinated smear campaign is being orchestrated against me", he stated. Consequently, I call on all appropriate and impartial investigatory authorities, including the FBI, to investigate fully and thoroughly the allegations against me by Ms. Watson and Dr. Tyson. The state party joins a long list of elected officials and Democratic presidential hopefuls who have called for Fairfax's resignation. The Associated Press is not reporting the details because the allegation has not been corroborated.

Kaneedreck Adams, a fellow Duke graduate and friend of Ms Watson, told the Washington Post she recalled when Ms Watson came to her crying in the spring of 2000. "She was upset, said Adams".

NASA and SpaceX aim for March launch of Crew Dragon capsule
The space agency is hoping one or both of the crew capsules will be certified as safe to fly by the end of this year. SpaceX also completed a pad abort test in 2015.

"She said the alleged assault took place at a fraternity house".

The two undergrads were "friends" at Duke but did not date or see each other romantically, according to Watson's lawyer, Nancy Erika Smith.

Hundreds of academics have also signed a letter in support of Prof Tyson, according to the Times. Tyson claims that an encounter with Fairfax "began as consensual kissing" and "quickly turned into a sexual assault".

What about the racism scandal?

Northam told his top staff Friday that he would not resign.

Northam said he has had painful conversations this week with black lawmakers - who continue to call publicly for him to resign - about the issue of blackface, and why it was wrong for him to darken his face to portray Michael Jackson in a San Antonio dance contest in 1984, as he has admitted doing.

On Friday he sent an email to state employees signalling his continued defiance of nearly universal calls for him to quit.

"This is very distressing for everybody in Richmond", Comstock said.

"Our Commonwealth is in uncharted waters, and many of you are undoubtedly left confused and uncertain about what the future holds".

Virginia's current governor, Ralph Northam, as well its attorney general, Mark Herring, have been embroiled in a controversy surrounding use of blackface for the past week.
