Delhi hotel fire kills 17

At least 17 people died on Tuesday as a fire tore through a budget hotel in Delhi before dawn, in the latest disaster to raise concerns over fire safety in India.

A call was recieved at 4.30 am from Karol Bagh's Arpit Palace Hotel and immediately 25 fire tenders were rushed to the spot, the officer at the Delhi Fire Department headquarters told IANS.

Paul says the fire engulfed most of the five-storey hotel.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known, but the police said most deaths occurred due to suffocation.

Sunil Choudhary, Deputy Chief, Fire Officer speaking to ANI said, "Fire has been doused".

An investigation has been launched to find the exact cause of the fire.

More than 20 fire tenders were rushed to the spot and rescue operations were underway, it said.

The fire broke out at Arpit Palace Hotel located on Gurudwara Road in Karol Bagh.

Linehan replaced him, and the duo combined to complete under 50 percent of their passes while throwing a pair of interceptions. Former Alabama star Trent Richardson tallied a rushing touchdown for Birmingham in the victory.

Thirty-five people were rescued and those injured were taken to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

The incident raised fresh questions about safety standards in poorly regulated hotels catering to the less affluent.

"Investigation is on. Strict action will be taken against the guilty", Delhi minister Satyendar Jain, who visited the site, said. "There was wood panelling on the corridor because of which people couldn't use corridors to evacuate; two had jumped off the building".

"This hotel had been built up to six floors".

A number of hotel guests have been killed, including a child, when they were suffocated in smoke from a severe fire that ripped through a hotel.

Last week, a fire broke out in a hospital in a Delhi suburb, forcing emergency evacuation of patients.

Unconfirmed reports say the death toll is likely to rise as numerous injured jumped from the burning building to the ground.
