Jody Wilson-Raybould resigns from cabinet

Trudeau government to block probe into SNC-Lavalin Scandal

The company faces charges of bribing Libyan officials between 2001 and 2011 in exchange for contracts.

Jody Wilson-Raybould confirmed she is resigning from her cabinet position amid allegations the Prime Minister's Office pressured the former attorney general to help SNC-Lavalin Group Inc.

The commissioner is limited from saying much else until the examination is complete, but the statement does confirm this is in regards to the allegations in the Globe and Mail that the PMO attempted to pressure the now-former justice minister to cut a deal with SNC-Lavalin in order to drop criminal charges against the company. "And I also highlight that we're bound by cabinet confidentiality".

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau address attendees at the Liberal fundraising event at the Delta Hotel in Toronto, Ont., on Thursday, February 7, 2019. But if anyone was trying to exert pressure on Wilson-Raybould to influence the legal proceedings, they crossed the line.

On Wednesday, the House justice committee will meet to review a request from the opposition parties that the committee investigate the allegations.

Trudeau denies claim PMO pressured AG to drop SNC-Lavalin case
They are also owed more answers than the Prime Minister has so far offered. Wilson-Raybould was unable to mask still-evident shock.

Appearing at the BC housing development alongside Canada's Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan, and Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, Jonathan Wilkinson, Justin Trudeau said he welcomes an investigation. The attorney general must consent to the negotiation of the agreement.

In a letter published on her website, Wilson-Raybould thanked the residents of Vancouver-Graniville, while stating that her resignation as Minister of the Crown "in no way changes my commitment to seeing" her goal of "implementing a positive and progressive version of change on behalf of all Canadians".

Her decision follows a week of scrutiny following bombshell allegations of political interference reported by The Globe and Mail.

"The issue of solicitor-client privilege is not a simple one so I have asked our attorney general to provide me with advice on this matter", he said.

Trudeau moved Wilson-Raybould to the veterans affairs portfolio in January.
