Legendary England World Cup-Winning Goalkeeper Gordon Banks Passes

Banks won the World Cup with England in 1966

During his worldwide career, he won 73 caps and played in two World Cups, and between 1966 and 1971 he was named Fifa's Goalkeeper Of The Year for six consecutive years.

The goalkeeper made his England debut in 1963 and played every game of the 1966 World Cup, including the final at Wembley where the hosts beat West Germany 4-2 to win the tournament for the first time.

The veteran shot-stopper, who played for Stoke City and Leicester City among a storied career, died peacefully in his sleep overnight, his family confirmed .

'We are devastated to lose him but we have so many happy memories and could not have been more proud of him'.

Banks lost the sight in his right eye after being injured in a road accident in 1972 and retired at the age of 34 as a result.
