Trudeau denies claim PMO pressured AG to drop SNC-Lavalin case

Trudeau's office pressured Justice Minister to drop case against company with deep Liberal ties

If passed, the committee would hear from Wilson-Raybould, new Attorney General David Lametti, Trudeau's chief of staff, Katie Telford, Trudeau's principal secretary Gerald Butts, Privy Council clerk Michael Wernick, director of public prosecutions Kathleen Roussel, senior PMO advisers Mathieu Bouchard and Elder Marques; and Wilson-Raybould's chief of staff Jessica Prince.

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer says the explanations from the prime minister and his team in the wake of the allegations, reported in the Globe and Mail, simply aren't good enough.

In Trudeau's absence from the House of Commons yesterday, Lametti faced a barrage of questions about the allegations, which he repeatedly denied.

He said requesting that the officials appear at committee is his party's next step because it can happen immediately, though they have also begun exploring other "legal avenues".

"The allegations in the Globe story this morning are false", he said at a press conference in Vaughan.

The idea behind it is that a corporation should be held to account for wrongdoing without facing a prosecution that could bankrupt the company and make innocent employees pay the price for the actions of some unethical executives. Much deeper. Wilson-Raybould was unable to mask still-evident shock.

The news, first reported by The Globe & Mail, was shot down by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a odd non-denial denial.

"At no point has the current minister of justice or the former minister of justice been directed or pressured by the prime minister or the Prime Minister's Office to make any decision on this or any other matter", Virani told the House of Commons on Friday. They are also owed more answers than the Prime Minister has so far offered.

Ryan Wilson to miss remainder of Scotlands Six Nations campaign
In the second we took the foot off the gas, allowed them into the game and they took control. "Three slip-ups cost us", he said. We launched off a line-out in the second half and Sean O'Brien reached the ball, ' explained Laidlaw.

NDP party leader Jagmeet Singh has also called for an ethics investigation into the allegations, which Scheer also supports. "MPs have a duty to determine what exactly happened here and Justin Trudeau and his office must be forthcoming".

"All this cries out for some serious investigation", Singh said in a telephone interview with the Canadian Press.

McLeod said while the prime minister may not have "directed" Wilson-Raybould to abandon prosecution of SNC-Lavalin, even asking, suggesting or pressuring is "totally inappropriate".

"If he truly wants to clear this up and believes there's been no wrongdoing, he should welcome an investigation from the ethics commissioner".

Parliament was seized this week by an allegation that the Prime Minister's Office tried to pressure its justice minister into interfering in how federal prosecutors treat the corruption case of SNC-Lavalin, a massive Montreal-based engineering and construction firm.

"If there is any going to be any discussion from very high levels in the government to grant an exemption ... to a company when we are talking about very serious criminal prosecutions, that must be done with full transparency".

"As the former minister of justice and attorney general of Canada, I am bound by solicitor-client privilege in this matter", she said. Among other things, she wrote that "it is a pillar of our democracy that our system of justice be free from even the perception of political interference" and that, as attorney general, she believed she must be "always willing to speak truth to power". "This is not what we are seeing here", Mr. Scheer said.

The fact that such directives must be done publicly is meant to constrain a justice minister from doing anything overtly political.
