Britain to 'enhance lethality' amid Russia, China threats -Minister

Gavin Williamson

The defence secretary said the government is invoking a "Global Britain" mantra which must involve "action to oppose those who flout worldwide law".

"The UK is a global power with truly global interest. we must be prepared to compete for our interests and our values far, far from home", Williamson said.

Williamson will also say that Britain "may have to intervene" in the future to confront Russian Federation and China, which he claims in the pre-released speech are "resurgent" in rebuilding their armed forces.

He continued: "I want to see our armed forces embracing transformation at an ever-faster rate, keeping pace with technological change, enhancing our mass and increasing our lethality".

In his speech, Williamson will also talk about forming new alliances. Opponents describe it as a blow both to Britain's influence and to the West as a whole.

"We can build new alliances, rekindle old ones and most importantly make it clear that we are the country that will act when required. We should be the nation that people can turn to when the world needs leadership", Williamson said.

Fifth Pebble Beach victory makes Mickelson's day
Open will be at Pebble Beach this year but Phil Mickelson does not think winning there on Monday will aid his Grand Slam chances. Both Mickelson and Casey will be playing in this week's Genesis Open , alongside the likes of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.

Williamson has previously lobbied successfully for more defense funding.

In a keynote speech on the country's new military strategy later on Monday, UK Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson is expected to announce that the Royal Navy's new aircraft carrier, the HMS Queen Elizabeth, will be deployed to disputed waters in the Pacific in a show of "hard power", The Independent reports. Nevertheless, the armed forces face a long-term budget shortfall estimated by a parliamentary committee to reach 15 billion pounds over the next decade.

The British defense Secretary Gavin Williamson believes that after leaving the EU, London should be ready to expand its military presence overseas, and to take action against countries that violate global laws.

Williamson added that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries should step up and pay their 2 percent share of spending, while European countries must "not be distracted by the notion of an EU army".

The alliance "must develop its ability to handle the kind of provocations that Russian Federation is throwing at us", he will say. It was Washington's main battlefield ally in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, with more than 600 troops killed.

At an address given to the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) in London, Williamson said Britain was the second largest investor in the region and it must display "hard power" and "lethality" to help protect interests.
