Manchester United vs. Paris Saint-Germain in UEFA Champions League

Manchester United caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

PSG head coach Thomas Tuchel thought his Argentinian forward had been below par before the interval but was delighted he delivered a stunning riposte in the second half.

Solskjaer also was unhappy seeing Presnel Kimpembe finish the game for PSG.

Kylian Mbappe doubled the lead and effectively ended the tie when he raced in between Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof to convert the Argentinean's low cross. "It was a big step up, they have quality from the keeper to the strikers".

Check out 90min's breakdown of the game below.

Despite their depleted ranks, PSG ran out worthy winners and United lost by more than one goal in a home European tie for the first time.

With Jesse Lingard suffering an unfortunate knock, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer put his faith in a proven performer at the highest level to enter the fold and make a difference.

What will irk Solskjaer is that the two goals his team conceded were relatively soft.

"I can't do anything about Alexis Sanchez", said the Norwegian. Instead it was United who received the only red card of the game when Paul Pogba was dismissed in the 89th minute.

Leeds United star Jack Clarke in hospital after collapsing during Middlesbrough game
Clarke made his Leeds debut against Brentford in October and has gone on to make 17 appearances this season. Marcelo Bielsa's side are now second in the table, trailing Norwich City by two points.

As a unit, the Manchester United players were collectively poor. PSG could also be in trouble as an item landed at the feet of Luke Shaw in the first half.

Although he was responsible for the PSG goal, Matic otherwise did well in the middle of the park, ensuring that PSG did not grab a third goal after scoring two so quickly.

But Tuchel recognised he was United's most influential player and used Marquinhos to nullify him completely. United though did bounce back from that by then winning in Turin against the Italian champions 2-1.

And according to Arsene Wenger, PSG's gameplan worked perfectly, as they frustrated Pogba all evening. "Today who would dispute that Martial is indispensable for Man United?"

The Red Devils have beaten both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur since Solskjaer's appointment but Manchester United will still have to face Liverpool FC, Chelsea FC and Manchester City in the Premier League.

PSG return to action in Ligue 1 on Sunday, with an away game to St. Étienne.

It would take a monumental reverse in fortunes if United are to reach the quarter-finals after the second leg in Parc de Princes on March 6.
