Root falls as England stumble to tea

England captain Joe Root has responded to apparent sledging from Shannon Gabriel by telling the West Indies fast bowler "there is nothing wrong with being gay".

Root was repeatedly asked to reveal what Gabriel said on the field but declined each time.

"Sometimes people say things on the field that they might regret".

Darren Bravo perished shortly after the resumption to another Root slip catch and the delighted fast bowler returned after some resistance from Shane Dowrich (38) to polish off the innings and complete the five-wicket haul when he yorked last man Shannon Gabriel.

"Afraid "what is said on the field stays there" is not good enough any more", added journalist Paul Newman.

Former England cricketer Nasser Hussain said Root's reaction would help cement his legacy.

But Stokes and Buttler came together for an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 124 as two of England's traditionally aggressive batsmen, perhaps in light of recent criticism of the side's approach, reined in their natural game to guide their team to a strong position.

Federal court marshals whisked Guzman out of the courtroom immediately after the judge read the guilty verdict. The defense has accused prosecution cooperators of making him a scapegoat for their own crimes.

Root surprised when he chose to keep batting in the morning, moving from 111 to 122 in six overs when he hit a full toss from Shannon Gabriel to midwicket.

Root went on to produce a terrific display, racking up 111 runs not out to end the day with England sitting on 325-4 ahead of the fourth day.

Gabriel has been fined 75 per cent of his match fee for the third Test in St Lucia and handed three demerit points, taking his total to eight.

England has a dominant lead of 448 in the final test, despite losing the opening two games of the series.

"The charge, which was laid by match umpires, will now be dealt with by Match Referee Jeff Crowe".

It is understood that no further disciplinary measures will be taken surrounding the incident.

West Indies coach Richard Pybus said there have been no reports of abusive language but will investigate if any are made. "This calm and firm response will make a difference in ways we may never see and never know", she tweeted.
