Cyclone watch issued as Oma approaches southeast coast

There's A Chance Cyclone Oma Could Make Landfall In QLD Over The Weekend

Events along the Queensland coast are being cancelled and holidaymakers are rescheduling travel plans as unsafe conditions are expected to continue into early next week.

Forecasters said it's less likely that Cyclone Oma will cross the Queensland coast, but people are still being warned to expect high winds and risky swell.

Surf Life Saving Queensland at 8.30am announced that all Gold Coast beaches were closed as a result of the combination of big swell generated by Oma and unusually high tides, and most beaches between the Sunshine Coast and Fraser Island are also closed.

Oma has weakened to a Category One system overnight with sustained winds of 85 kilometres an hour and gusts of 120 kilometres. Abnormally high tides & risky surf conditions continue.

Some beaches will be closed as unsafe winds, surf and abnormally high tides continue into the weekend from about Fraser Island down to the NSW border. Are you prepared for the weather event?

It's slowly moving south and is expected to re-intensify to a category two storm later in the day, before making a u-turn on Saturday and heading north again.

Forecasters say the weather system will continue to bring high winds and unsafe surf conditions to parts of the Queensland and northern NSW coast in coming days.

It is expected to move southwest over the next few days and will generate an increasing east to north easterly swell at Southern Queensland beaches.

Warnings have been issued for high winds and unsafe swell coinciding with king tides along the east coast from Thursday. Beach erosion is likely to continue with the hazardous marine conditions'.

The worst effects are expected to be galeforce winds, very high swells that could erode beaches, and the possibility of heavy rain. The Bureau has issued a flood watch from Gladstone to the New South Wales border.

Wednesday morning had forecasters downplay the cyclone threat but as the Cyclone changed tracks suddenly, damage potential has increased.

Bureau of Meteorology spokeswoman Annabelle Ford said the region's best chance of rain would come on Sunday.

While it is unusual for a cyclone to track this far south, it is not unprecedented.

Ms Pattie said depending on how strongly the ridge developed, it could determine the cyclone's impact.

In 1990, Tropical Cyclone Nancy was the last to directly impact Brisbane, however it did not make landfall, instead grazing Byron Bay's coast before moving offshore.
