FDA says asbestos found in cosmetics at teen chain Claire's

Claire's said it had removed the three products from its stores

The FDA issued a warning advising consumers against using certain makeup products from Claire's, as they could be contaminated with asbestos.

In its safety alert, the FDA identified the products as Claire's eye shadows, contour palette and compact powder and cited the talc used in the products. Cosmetics manufacturers are not required to test their products for safety.

'The FDA is not aware of any adverse reactions associated with exposure to these Claire's products, ' the agency said. The FDA also detected asbestos in a product by pre-teen retailer Justice, which had already been recalled in 2017.

Claire's Europe said in a statement: "At Claire's, customer safety is paramount, and we pride ourselves on providing our customers with the highest quality and safest products". The FDA followed up with its own independent tests, and the results came back in late February. It said there are now no legal requirements for any cosmetic manufacturer selling goods to American consumers to test their products for safety.

Claire's said: "Despite our efforts to discuss these issues with the FDA, they insisted on moving forward with their release".

"Claire's has informed us that it does not believe that affected products are still available for sale", said the FDA's safety alert.

The retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection a year ago.

In December of 2017, the Scientific Analytical Institute in North Carolina found asbestos in Claire's glitter makeup kits, WKBN reported.

Royal Family gathers to celebrate 50 years of the Prince of Wales
The event marked the first time the duchesses have been pictured together since Christmas Day. Then he suddenly announced: "I'm now going to try and drag my wife on stage".

Claire's, meanwhile, said in a Tuesday night email to The Miami Herald that the FDA is wrong.

"The FDA is therefore warning consumers not to use these products and will continue to communicate our safety concerns", said the report. The regulator warned consumers not to use the products, although Claire's disputed the findings.

There are no laws requiring companies to test their cosmetic products for safety, and the FDA has limited authority to ensure the safety of cosmetic products.

The FDA said it would work with Congress to update the regulatory framework that the agency has been operating under for more than 80 years for cosmetics.

Asbestos is a mineral often found near talc, a common ingredient in many cosmetics, and if steps are not taken to purify raw talc sufficiently the talc put in consumer products may be contaminated with asbestos, the FDA said.

Asbestos becomes unsafe when particles or fibers enter the lungs or stomach.

The FDA announced that it's starting a voluntary registry for cosmetic companies to list their products and ingredients, including talc.

The FDA does not have the authority to recall cosmetics, as it does with food and drugs.
