Congressional Democrats hope to revive net neutrality

Stabenow, Peters introduce legislation to reinstate Net Neutrality

Top congressional Democrats have announced legislation to restore Obama-era "net neutrality" rules that seek to bar internet service providers such as AT&T and Comcast from playing favorites with websites and services.

"Access to an open internet is crucial for entrepreneurs, small business-owners, students and families across MI", said Senator Peters.

"Net neutrality ensures that when you pay your monthly bill to your internet service provider, you can able to access all content on the web at the same speed as your neighbor or big corporations", said Markey, who has been a passionate advocate of strong network neutrality protections since the George W. Bush administration.

"We're talking about what the country stands for, and so when we talk about saving the internet, we're talking about saving the marketplace, we're talking about saving our democracy", the New Jersey Democrat said. "People in MI depend on reliable, high-speed internet to run their businesses, get an education, and succeed in their daily lives". Republicans have pledged support for some type of net neutrality law, but not one as strong as the repealed FCC rules. Democrats control the House. The 2017 vote had repealed the order that prohibited blocking, throttling, or in any other case discriminating in opposition to lawful content material, and opened the door for web service suppliers to dam or throttle content material at their very own discretion.

Last year's legislation was a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution, a type of bill that gets some special parliamentary privileges.

"Last year we sent a message on net neutrality to Donald Trump and today we send another".

House and Senate Democrats unveiled legislation on Wednesday to reinstate net neutrality laws that were undone under the Trump administration. ISPs like the idea of not having Net Neutrality, as it allows them to slow down your internet when you are watching Netflix, or charge more for Netflix streaming versus regular Internet browsing. The new bill would effectively shoot down the current FCC order – the Restoring Internet Freedom Order - voted in by a commission led by Chairman Ajit Pai.

"Simply reviving a defunct regulatory order isn't legislation, and probably wouldn't stand up in court when challenged", he said, adding that the bill is likely dead-on-arrival in the Republican-controlled Senate.

Trump weighed in on net neutrality before, displaying a very limited grasp of what the concept actually means - but generally taking a stance against it.

Now the question is if the Save the Internet Act will finally reinstate the FCC's net neutrality rules or if this will just be another effort that accomplishes nothing.

"We need the same rules on the Internet", Schumer urged.

"Let's come together to ensure that continues, because all sides want a permanent solution", they said.
