Elizabeth Warren vows to break up tech giants if elected president

Warren would also appoint federal regulators "committed to using existing tools to unwind anti-competitive mergers".

Her plan would divide large tech platforms from any participant on that platform. The organization wrote that Warren's plan "ignores the fact that numerous services big tech companies now provide free used to cost consumers money".

"We must ensure that today's tech giants do not crowd out potential competitors, smother the next generation of great tech companies, and wield so much power that they can undermine our democracy", Warren said Friday.

Concerning the platforms and rebranding them as utilities, Warren said that companies with annual global revenues of $25 billion or more that offer online marketplaces, exchanges or places to connect third parties would be designated as utilities and be prohibited from owning both the platform and participants on the platform.

Warren is not the only Democratic presidential candidate to point to economic insecurity, as seen in slow rises in wages and sharply higher prices for essentials like insulin. "And in the process, they have hurt small businesses and stifled innovation", Warren wrote.

"Instead of nationalizing these industries-as other countries did-Americans in the Progressive Era made a decision to ensure that these networks would not abuse their power by charging higher prices, offering worse quality, reducing innovation, and favoring some over others", she said.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) today proposed breaking up Amazon, Google, and Facebook as part of a plan to regulate tech platforms as utilities.

‘Captain Marvel’s End Credits Scene Explained & What It Means For [SPOILER]
This is the first Marvel movie since the death last November of Stan Lee, the founding father of Marvel Comics. The characters display recognisable humanity which is the film's balance but not often enough or convincingly.

The outcome of the post - in addition to laying out a pretty badass plan for promoting increased competition and accountability in tech - is that Warren just made breaking up Big Tech a Big Issue for the 2020 democratic primaries, and potentially even 2020 presidential election.

Warren's latest policy proposal promised to be a central element of her NY appearance as well as her scheduled visit Saturday to the SXSW conference in Austin, Texas.

In late February, Warren announced a plan to guarantee every American free or affordable childcare. She mentioned other holes that prevail in tech policy, like helping local newspapers to make money off their work online.

Now this is what we call a power move. "Time to break up these companies so they don't have so much power over everyone else".

The company produces over $25 billion in revenue and would have to choose between, for example, "running the App Store or offering their own apps", said Saloni Sharma, a spokesperson with the campaign.

Warren's blueprint - detailed in a Medium post - comes as she prepares to speak to supporters in Long Island City, New York, where Amazon initially sought to construct one of two new headquarters.
