$279M lotto winner's ex-wife doesn't want him or his money

Weirsky returned to the store the next day before the drawing and picked up the ticket.

He had been unemployed for 15 years, he said, living as a stay-at-home husband and moving often for his ex-wife's job.

"I had to deny it before I even went", he said. "And when I get the money I'm going to do that".

The 54-year-old divorced man said he had been looking for work for about a year and wasn't having much luck - that is, until Wednesday's good fortune. "I put the tickets down, put my money away, did something with my phone and just walked away", he told reporters on Thursday. I'm not going after anything.

He said a friend of his mother's called to say she thought a mutual friend of theirs had hit the jackpot.

His ex reckons he'll use the winnings to support his family and donate to animal charities, adding that she hopes he'll "do the right thing". He added, "If you think about it, it is very hard to say who owns a lottery ticket short of someone coming in here and saying, 'I purchased this ticket".

"I truly wish him well.though I know he doesn't believe that. I had to give him a lot of money in the divorce", she said. "I figured when I woke up Friday morning, like, well, just another thing I lost".

Mike Weirsky speaking to Fox.

Weirsky's ex, Eileen Murray, told the New York Post that Weirsky did not become any more appealing to her because of his win.

Weirsky told the NJ Advance Media that he knows people will approach him asking for money and that he'd consider giving some to people who treated him well; those that didn't can forget about it, he added. Though I know he doesn't believe that.

"I was very thankful there was an honest person out there because I thought it was gone", he said. "I don't think anybody should be taken advantage of".

Mike has yet to respond to these statements, but he did reveal during the conference that he's now searching for the good egg who handed in his ticket. Then she quizzed him on what tickets he had bought before handing them over, he said.

"I'm gonna give him something yes, but I'm gonna keep that private, " he said.
