College coaches, actresses indicted in admissions bribery case

Lori Loughlin, Felicity Huffman Charged in College Admission Scam

Actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman were indicted in a nationwide, federal college admissions bribery case.

Dozens of people, including coaches at top universities around the country and a pair of Hollywood actresses, have been charged in a college admissions bribery takedown, federal authorities announced late Tuesday morning, March 12.

Loughlin is best known for her role as Aunt Becky in "Full House" while Huffman is known for her role on "Desperate Housewives".

Prosecutors said parents paid William Singer, an admissions consultant, from 2011 through last month to bribe coaches and administrators to label their children as recruited athletes, to alter test scores and to have others take online classes to boost their children's chances of getting into schools. It does not appear the schools were involved in the wrong-doing.

According to the charging documents, Ms Huffman made a "charitable contribution" of $15,000 (£11,500) to participate in the scheme on behalf of her eldest daughter.

On a call with a wealthy parent, prosecutors said, Singer summed up his business thusly: "What we do is help the wealthiest families in the USA get their kids into school ... my families want a guarantee".

Iranian president meets Iraqi leader in historic bid for 'new start'
Tehran hopes to increase the roughly $13 billion volume in trade between the two neighbouring countries to $20 billion. Tehran also made political connections with Iraq's Shia leaders, who had been persecuted by Saddam's government.

Some coaches indicted, per charging documents from the U.S. Attorney's Office, include Georgetown tennis coach Gordon Ernst, Stanford sailing coach John Vandemoer, Texas men's tennis coach Michael Center, UCLA men's soccer coach Jorge Salcedo and Yale women's soccer coach Rudy Meredith.

Bribes reportedly ranged from a few thousand dollars to up to $6 million.

"For every student admitted through fraud, an honest and genuinely talented student was rejected", Lelling said.

Huffman and her husband were given a rundown of how the scam worked in December 2017 inside their Los Angeles home, authorities said.

On a sport specific level, no one made out better in this scheme (until they got caught) than former Yale women's soccer coach Rudy Meredith, who just so happened to resign in November of past year.

Singer funneled bribe payments to her through Fox, court documents allege, but in July 2018 Singer sent her a $5,000 check directly. In most cases, the students did not know their admission had been paid for with a bribe, but in several the students were involved, officials added. In the case of Huffman's daughter, she was given twice the amount of time usually given to students taking the SAT, and a proctor later corrected her wrong answers.
