The answer is simple and certainly not as dramatic as the events yet to unfold on Thrones during season 8: the episodes hadn't been finalized when Nutter wrote that they would all be around 60 minutes or longer, and the editing process clipped away a few minutes from each. In January, Entertainment Weekly reported on a leaked report from a TV conference in France. That's shorter than the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but still epic in scope, especially considering the final season of Game of Thrones is only the end of the A Song of Ice and Fire saga. The report stated that while Episode 1 and 2 would be around 60 minutes each, the next four will be approximately 80. As the end of Games of Thrones approaches, they gave clues on EW about the latest sequence of the series. "I'm very satisfied with that, and I think that the fans will be satisfied with that, too". Similarly, toggle further down and you'll find that episode two is 58 minutes long.

That remark echoed what Thrones sound designer Paula Fairfield noted about the impending season 8 episodes. First, they said they wanted to make all the decisions regarding the ending: 'When you have been working on something for so long, you have specific ideas of how each moment should happen.
