8 killed in mass shooting in southern Brazil school

Police officers guarded the entrance of the Raul Brasil State School in Suzano Brazil Wednesday after authorities said two teenagers entered the school and began shooting at students

Sao Paulo state authorities say eight people have been killed in a school shooting in Brazil, including two student shooters.

Governor of Sao Paulo, Joao Doria, condemned the "cruel murder" The official arrived at the shooting scene shortly after the incident.

The shooting happened in Suzano, a suburb of Sao Paulo, Brazil's largest city.

Doria said the school had been evacuated and police were inspecting possible explosives left by the shooters.

Another ten people, mostly schoolchildren, were shot and injured, and several were in serious condition, said police, who lowered their estimates for the number of children killed and those injured late on Wednesday afternoon.

Teacher Sandra Perez told O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper: "I was in the classroom during our break". I thought [the sound] was from bombs. When I realised they were gunshots, I stayed there.

Authorities identified the attackers as 17-year-old Guilherme Taucci Monteiro and 25-year-old Henrique de Castro.

Before entering the Raul Brasil school in the Sao Paulo city of Suzano, the assailants, aged 17 and 25 and both former pupils, shot and killed the owner of a auto rental agency from which they had stolen a vehicle.

Gun laws are strict in Brazil, but it is not hard to purchase a weapon illegally.

The last one occurred in 2011, when the former student of a school returned and shot 12 children fatally, Fox News reports.

President Jair Bolsonaro ran on a platform that included promises to crack down on criminals, in part by expanding public access to guns.
