Brexit vote: Only 40 MPs won over by assurances

The Prime Minister's plight was the delight of Twitter as users took to the platform in force to mock the embattled leader as she tried in vain to persuade MPs to back her deal.

The North West Cambridgeshire MP said: "Given no-deal Brexit is the Government's default position, will the Prime Minister kindly inform the House she will instruct the Chancellor to make available whatever funds are required to ensure the country is as best prepared as possible in the event we do leave on a no-deal basis".

A Labour Party spokesman said: "Allowing a free vote on no deal shows Theresa May has given up any pretence of leading the country".

She said: "This tells us everything that is wrong with a no-deal scenario".

The CEO of global consultancy DARE, said businesses continue to rally against a no-deal Brexit - and this should be foremost in the minds of MPs tonight.

The defeat - the fourth worst suffered by a British government - paves the way for a series of votes this week which are set to block a no-deal Brexit and delay Britain's exit from the EU.

Under the no deal plan revealed this morning, 87 per cent of products would be subject to zero tariffs in an effort to stop price spikes and kick-start trade with Britain from across the world.

UK Parliament votes against Theresa May's Brexit deal 242-391
Mr Zeichner slammed the government for "recklessly wasting yet more time in order to force a false binary choice" over Brexit. Mr Corbyn said the Government needed to "accept their deal is clearly dead and does not have the support of this House".

"Instead of making any genuine attempt to work constructively with others, the Prime Minister spent the last two and a half years pandering to the DUP and her own increasingly right-wing backbenchers, all while ignoring the concerns of the devolved governments".

Hours before tonight's vote, ministers announced worrying new tariffs that are likely to provoke more accusations of scaremongering after months of apocalyptic warnings about the impact of a no deal Brexit.

Channel 4 News host Krishnan Guru-Murthy said: "Theresa May has lost her voice - this is very bad".

Walker said May would lead the party into any election.

Speaking in Strasbourg, where the European Parliament is gathering for a debate on Brexit ahead of the next European Council summit, the EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier said: 'Again the House of Commons says what it doesn't want.

He said: "I made a promise in the election to call a referendum and I called the referendum". The impasse can only be solved in the UK.
