Paul Manafort: Ex-Trump chief gets 43 more months in jail

Paul Manafort returns to court for another sentencing

Paul Manafort, President Trump's former campaign chairman, was sentenced to an additional 3 1/2 additional years in prison on Wednesday.

In the D.C. case, Manafort pleaded guilty to committing various financial crimes, including tax fraud and failing to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) regarding his foreign lobbying on behalf of Ukraine.

Manafort appeared in a Washington, DC courtroom in a wheelchair on Wednesday, asking the judge for leniency.

"This case has taken everything from me already", he said.

Said Manafort to the judge: "In my previous elocution, I told Judge Ellis that I was ashamed at my conduct that brought me into his court, and for that, I said I took responsibility".

The former Trump campaign chairman was sentenced to 47 months in prison in that case, which partly focused on a series of loans that Manafort had taken out to extract money from his NY properties. These crimes were discovered during special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian collusion investigation, but they pre-date the 2016 presidential election. He pleaded with her to "please let my wife and I be together".

Manafort and his attorneys argued that he hadn't knowingly engaged in a pattern of deception with the prosecutors in the case and that his cooperation agreement should stay in force - that he should get credit for his plea and for the information he had given the government.

The hearing comes a week after a judge in Virginia sentenced Manafort to 47 months in prison, far below what government guidelines recommended.

Buffalo Bills set to sign free agent WR John Brown
According to NFL Insider for Sirius-XM Radio Adam Caplan, the Bills and wide receiver John Brown have agreed to a three-year deal. If Brown goes to Buffalo, he'll pair up with Josh Allen and his big arm on what will presumably be a lot of deep balls.

The former campaign manager was not ordered to pay any additional restitution after being ordered to pay a little more than $6 million last week. He was indicted with Manafort on charges of conspiring to tamper with witnesses in Manafort's D.C. case but is unlikely to be brought to court because Russian Federation does not extradite its citizens.

Manafort, a lifelong political operator whose clients have included dictators Ferdinand Marcos and Mobutu Sese Seko, said he has learned his lesson.

At the same time, he said he hoped Manafort would use his time behind bars to reflect on his behavior. "Judge Ellis showed little restraint in his comments as well as his action", said George Washington University Law School professor Jonathan Turley.

Jackson will also decide whether the sentences should run consecutively or at the same time. He later added, "That should be your true regret, and you should have remorse for that". Jackson said Manafort committed fraud so he could live a lavish lifestyle.

Mueller's team also said that Manafort had lied about an August 2016 meeting with Kilimnik, a business associate who the USA said had ties to Russian intelligence.

In court on Wednesday, Manafort attorney Kevin Downing revealed that Manafort and Kilmnik were "communicating with senior State Department officials in Kiev", and noted that Mueller's team has conceded that "the highest level of state department officials knew of his activities".

This is a developing story.
