Google reportedly shifting employees away from tablet, laptop division

Meanwhile no major changes seem to have happened at Google in their other hardware product area divisions: Pixel, Home, and Wearables.

Employees asked to transfer in the past two weeks include hardware engineers, technical program managers, and program manager supporters.

Affected employees have been instructed to seek temporary roles within other Google or Alphabet teams, raising questions about Google's future hardware plans.

For those that don't know, the "Create" team is the hardware wing that works on tablets and notebooks, such as the Pixel Slate and Pixelbook.

According to one source, "a bunch of stuff was in the works" that will most likely now be shelved as part of "roadmap cutbacks" - essentially ending work on products that were previously planned for late 2019 and beyond.

Considering its origins in search and focus on advertising, Google is actually also responsible for a fair bit of hardware these days. That's certainly one interpretation of reports that have emerged from within the company suggesting Google seems to be trimming its product portfolio, or is about to.

Google releases first Android Q beta for Pixel phones
This is a first for Google as the company only allowed OTAs of Android betas in the later stages when it had become more stable. In prior versions of Android, apps could only get your location when they ask for permission and the users grants it.

This does not mean we will see Google's Chromebook running Chrome OS going away.

Today, the Create division is responsible for the Pixelbook laptop and Pixel Slate tablet amongst the company's wider swath of "Made by Google" products.

Google makes most its money on advertisements and services. The longtime tech reviewer Walt Mossberg said that the Pixel C represents "an object lesson in what Google shouldn't do if it pursues home-grown integration of hardware and software".

According to Business Insider, Google is now in the process of implementing a number of "roadmap cutbacks". According to a new report, Google's now taking employees that worked on those devices, moving them to new departments, and canceling future projects that were being worked on.

Since the start of the Nexus smartphone program, Google's made hardware as a sort of guide for the rest of the industry.
