Pelosi Comes Out against Impeachment: ‘He’s Just Not Worth It’

Nancy Pelosi Impeachment

President Trump's campaign on Tuesday called on his Democratic challengers for 2020 to say whether they support House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's stance against impeachment.

"Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there's something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don't think we should go down that path", Pelosi said in her interview. "I'm sure when we have bipartisan support the Congress will go forward", Rep. Brad Sherman, California Democrat, who introduced impeachment proceedings a year ago, told The Washington Times. Pelosi said that if Democrats had tried to impeach Bush when she was Speaker, voters may never have elected Barack Obama as president in 2008. The Tennessee Democrat said he hasn't done so this session "because I don't think the votes are anywhere near being there".

A recent poll out of Iowa shows Trump's support among Republicans at an extremely high level.

Sherman said that the multiple Democratic investigations of Trump might be a substitute for impeachment, "it's also possible it will be a prelude".

Speaking to reporters Tuesday, House Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries, a Democrat of NY, made a similar point: "We did not run on impeachment".

"I don't think it's something we decide whether or not it's "worth it", Ms Jayapal said.

Green said he's just acting as his conscience dictates, telling Fox News' Neil Cavuto, "We should not allow political expediency--wait until the next election--to trump the moral imperative to act when there is harm being caused to society".

"He's just not worth it", she added.

Higher food prices pushes up retail inflation
High food prices have led to a four-month high in retail inflation that rose to 2.57 per cent in February. Annual wage growth jumped 3.4% in February, the biggest increase since April 2009, from 3.1% in January.

Sherman, despite personally believing Trump should be impeached, actually agrees more with Pelosi than Green about voting on the matter. But she made clear how poorly she thought of him.

But Pelosi was quick to state that she wouldn't fixate on the possibility of impeachment proceedings.

It's also freaky because she later says: "All the challenges we have faced, we can withstand anything". Instead, House Democrats are pursuing their own broad, high-profile investigations that will keep the focus on Trump's business dealings and relationship with Russian Federation, exerting congressional oversight without having to broach the I-word.

A Republican-led House voted to impeach Democratic President Bill Clinton in 1998, midway through his second term in office, and the Senate voted not to remove him in 1999.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., a member of the House Judiciary Committee and a leader of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, said Pelosi's comments are "probably a reaction to everybody wanting to go to the end of an investigation when we haven't started". "Nobody thinks there is going to be a conviction in the Senate, unless circumstances very substantially change".

CNN's Alex Rogers wrote: "Pelosi's comments published Monday are perhaps her strongest yet against the issue, but the speaker has signaled for months her resistance to pushing for impeachment". "We are not governing with a focus on impeachment", Mr. Jeffries said.

And although Ms Pelosi said she believed it would be too divisive to try to impeach Mr Trump, she did characterise the President as unfit to hold office. Republicans later claimed a moral victory by saying that Clinton would be forever stained by the impeachment vote.

But he told ABC News that ahead of any impeachment proceedings, lawmakers would need to convince the American public that members were "not just trying to. reverse the results of the last election".
