Theresa May claims Brexit breakthrough ahead of crunch vote

European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker

It's nearly the eleventh hour and with so many setbacks to her name, Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May is hoping that she has clinched a last minute deal that will win over the Tory hardliners who've so cruelled her Brexit efforts to date.

May flew to Strasbourg, France, late Monday for talks with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

The U.K. also published a separate document, "interpreting" the joint statement in its own wording but with the tacit consent of the EU.

But a legal opinion commissioned from three senior lawyers by the People's Vote campaign for a second referendum said there was "no basis" for Mr Cox to alter his advice on the indefinite nature of the backstop.

"If there is a solution to the current impasse, it can only be found in London", it said, adding that "today's vote has significantly increased the likelihood of a "no-deal" Brexit".

As the U.K. will leave the bloc at the end of March, the border between Northern Ireland - a U.K. territory - and the Republic of Ireland, will remain as the only land border between the U.K. and the EU. "We owe it to history". Analysts believe that the latest concessions from the European Union may strengthen the PM's position in her party.

With just 17 days left until the United Kingdom's scheduled departure date, talks have been stuck on the same issue that has blocked progress for the past year: the backup plan meant to ensure there's never any need for customs checks at the land border between Ireland and the United Kingdom. Unless a deal or an extension is agreed by the end of March 29, the United Kingdom will by default crash out of the European Union without a deal, and chaos will ensue.

Labour's Shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer had warned earlier that "nothing had changed" from the first deal agreed in November past year.

Talks have been ill-tempered and optimism faded over the weekend.

Chiefs release veteran pass-rusher Justin Houston
He caught 11 passes for 117 yards and three touchdowns in 16 games last season while serving primarily as a blocker. Chiefs Coach Andy Reid said he has been fortunate to get to know Houston over the last six seasons.

Gove said he had not yet seen the attorney general's legal advice.

"The market had mostly priced in a defeat which is why the pound is not crossing key psychological levels of support against the dollar", said Karl Schamotta, director of foreign exchange strategy and structured products at Cambridge Global Payments. But at 5.15 p.m. "Said discussion was about how "there's no way out of this mess.er, this arrangement" - ie the backstop". The status of these documents will be scrutinized intensively during Tuesday's debate.

Theresa May has secured "legally binding" changes to her Brexit deal - just hours before MPs will vote to approve the agreement in the Commons.

"That is what parliament asked us to secure and that is what we have secured".

May said after meeting Juncker: "The attorney general will set out in legal analysis the meaning of the joint instrument and unilateral declaration to Parliament".

"For us Brexit will always be a tragic mistake", Udo Bullmann, the president of the Socialists and Democrats parliamentary group said, insisting Monday's new compromise shows Brussels is acting constructively. Earlier today, the DUP's Brexit Spokesman Sammy Wilson told LBC the new assurances on the Irish backstop seem to fall short of what Theresa May promised. A panel of euro-skeptic politicians will examine May's latest blueprint in detail, he said.

The currency swung about in an nearly 100-pip range soon after the House of Commons handed May her second defeat in two months on the U.K.'s divorce from the European Union.

Some British lawmakers warned their Brexit-backing colleagues that rejecting the deal could lead to Britain's departure being postponed indefinitely, because a delay would give momentum to opponents of Brexit.
