BREAKING NOW: Rockets Fired Towards Tel Aviv, Missiles Intercepted by Israeli Defenses

Air raid sirens wailed late Thursday throughout Tel Aviv, Israel's densely populated commercial capital, after an apparent rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. "There were reports of a number of Israelis who were treated for shock", reports The Jerusalem Post.

Reuters journalists heard explosions, but it was unclear whether they were caused by the rockets or the interceptor missiles fired by Israel's Iron Dome system. Similarly, Tel Aviv mayor Ron Huldai told local broadcaster, cited by AFP, one of the Gaza rockets "apparently fell into the sea, the other hit somewhere but not in Tel Aviv".

Immediately after the IDF confirmation, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced he would convene the security cabinet in the military headquarters in Tel Aviv.

Islamic Jihad and the Popular Resistance Committees, two smaller Gaza armed factions, also denied responsibility.

About 40 minutes after the alarm, traffic was flowing normally on Tel Aviv's main highway.

Gaza is controlled by Hamas, an Islamic militant group that seeks Israel's destruction.

The anniversary of the Gaza border protests is in two weeks, on March 30 and Palestinian groups have been preparing events and march to mark the date.

According to IDF reports, two rockets were launched on Thursday evening from Gaza, a coastal enclave to Israel's south ruled by the Hamas terror group.

Around 200 Palestinians have been killed in the demonstrations and about 60 other Palestinians have died in other incidents, including exchanges of fire across the border.
