Google Lookout uses AI to help visually-impaired people navigate the world

The app is developed with Artificial Intelligence to figure out the objects through the Smartphone's native camera app.

Since announcing the app previous year, Google said it has been "testing and improving the quality" of the app's results. The Shopping mode allows visually-impaired users to head over to shopping malls or grocery stores and pointing the phone towards a product or its barcode will help users identify the product they are holding. We're guessing it will all depend on how the app is received by Pixel 1, 2, and 3 users, whose feedback is specifically requested.

The AI-powered app, which has been undergoing testing since it was originally announced in May 2018, is created to help blind and visually impaired people by identifying the objects around them.

The app also reportedly assists users in situations such as learning about a new space for the first time, reading texts and documents, and completing daily chores such as cooking, cleaning, and shopping, Google said. The app is well done from the start: when you launch it, it starts by asking you which mode you want to use, so as not to cumber you with navigating menus. The catch? It's only available for people with Pixel devices in the US.

Google advises users to hold or wear the device (hanging a Pixel phone from a lanyard around the neck or placing it in a front shirt pocket), for easy Lookout access. As it communicates with the caller, Assistant would display a transcription of the conversation in real-time.

Google Lookout is now available for the Google Pixels smartphones, and only within the US.
