The House just voted to demand DOJ publicly release Mueller report

Doug Mills The New York Times News Service

The resolution is not binding but it is a way to make clear to Attorney General William Barr that there are strong expectations of him.

The Democratic-backed resolution, which passed 420-0, comes as Mueller appears to be nearing an end to his investigation. Lawmakers in both parties have maintained there will have to be some sort of public resolution when the report is done - and privately hope that a report shows conclusions that are favorable to their own side. But both McConnell and the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, South Carolina Sen. But the House vote shows that lawmakers from both parties are eager to view Mueller's findings after nearly two years of speculation about what they might reveal.

Weissmann's departure is the clearest sign yet that Mueller's investigation is wrapping up.

Before Thursday's vote, Rep. It also calls for the entire report to be given to Congress.

The vote came after Barr refused in his confirmation hearings in February to commit to releasing Mueller's eventual report in full. That report must explain why the special counsel chose to either pursue or decline prosecutions.

Democrats are anxious that Barr's strict defense of his own prerogative, combined with his stated respect for Justice Department rules advising against both the indictment of a sitting president or impugning an unindicted individual in an investigative report, means potential information implicating President Donald Trump in alleged wrongdoing could be buried.

'Empire' actor expected to plead not guilty at hearing
Earlier this morning, trial Judge Steven Watkins was assigned to the case and to conduct this morning's arraignment. The actor is accused of falsifying a police report, and lying to police.

Republicans agree - to a point. "Nothing has been presented ... that Mr. Barr wouldn't do what the regulation says".

With Democrats in control of the House, it is a near-certainty that the bill will pass, forcing Republicans to go on record on whether they support the transparency of the report or not, before it moves to the Senate for another likely vote.

Collins also had a warning for Democrats: "What happens when it comes back and none of this is true, the president did not do anything wrong?" Texas congressman Will Hurd, a member of the House intelligence committee, said he believes the resolution should have been even broader. "The American people need to know as much as they can and see as much as they can". He added that "full transparency is the only way to prevent future innuendo".

Excluding themselves from the bipartisan House consensus were four members, who instead chose to vote present: libertarians Rep. Justin Amash (Ky.) and Rep. Thomas Massie (Mich.), and President Donald Trump Republican loyalists Rep. Matt Gaetz (Fla.) and Paul Gosar (Ariz.).

Weissmann, who has taught at the New York University School of Law in the past, is in talks with the school to return to a teaching post "following his current commitments", said Michael Orey, a university spokesman.
