Brexit: MPs to vote on 29 March no-deal exit from EU

A Brexit expert on where Theresa May went wrong in her negotiations

Theresa May has resisted calls to sack rebel Cabinet ministers after the no-deal Brexit vote left her authority in shreds. With the Brexit deal now dead in the water, and only two weeks to go until the United Kingdom exits the EU, MPs now face two key votes this week.

Amber Rudd, David Mundell, Greg Clark and David Gauke stayed in the tea room rather than join government colleagues attempting to vote down the motion, which had been amended to rule out no-deal in all circumstances, rather than just by the March 29 deadline.

391 MPs voted against the deal with 242 MPs voting for it.

"The prime minister's deal has failed, she no longer has the ability to lead", he said.

"The prime minister has been stubbornly declaring that the only choice is between her deal and no deal", Corbyn said.

Its chief negotiator Michel Barnier said the European Union "cannot go any further" in trying to persuade MPs to back the agreed terms of exit and the United Kingdom had to break the impasse.

But dismissing calls from Tory MPs to embrace a no-deal exit now, Mrs May said her deal remained the best way to honour the 2016 referendum result.

"She needs to reassert her authority.

You'd have to have a supermajority in the House of Commons or two no-confidence votes and I don't think either of those will happen", he said.

"That's what the deal delivers, that's what I continue to work to deliver".

"We take note of the votes in the House of Commons this evening", the spokesman said.

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that Eurosceptic MPs had to "start with realities" that less than a quarter of MPs would accept a "No Deal" Brexit and said he expected a move to reject "No Deal" would pass handsomely.

The North West Cambridgeshire MP said: "Given no-deal Brexit is the Government's default position, will the Prime Minister kindly inform the House she will instruct the Chancellor to make available whatever funds are required to ensure the country is as best prepared as possible in the event we do leave on a no-deal basis".

Ms Rudd used a letter to constituents to defend her decision - and appeared to blame hardliners in the European Research Group for derailing the Prime Minister's Brexit plans.

Labour's Hilary Benn, pushing the cross-party amendment, said he was not seeking to specify what MPs should do next but instead "book a slot" to allow a debate on how to resolve Brexit.

She said: "I'm grateful... for the spirit in which they have sought to broker compromise in this House".

Ahead of the no-deal Commons vote, the government announced that most imports into the United Kingdom would not attract a tariff in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
