Nadal Wins in Straight Sets to Reach Indian Wells Quarters

Indian Wells: Roger Federer beats Kyle Edmund to reach quarter-finals

Edmund, who won the Indian Wells second-tier Challenger event last week, struggled on serve in the opening set.

Nadal is one of the greatest tennis players of all time, with 17 grand slam titles to his name - just three behind Roger Federer on 20. "Happy the way I played".

Roger Federer of Switzerland returns a shot to Kyle Edmund of Great Britain during the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on March 13, 2019 in Indian Wells, California.

Krajinovic will be a big underdog when he faces Spain's world number two Rafa Nadal, who crushed Argentine Diego Schwartzman 6-3 6-1 on the showcase court to reach the last 16. He never really got going.

Afterwards, in a clear indication of her confidence, Andreescu said: "For me, the sky's the limit".

Nadal, 17 times a Grand Slam victor, ruthlessly put an end to Serbian qualifier Filip Krajinovic's run at the tournament, converting three of his four break point opportunities to advance 6-3 6-4. Though Nadal was not fully-satisfied with his performance in the match and said, "I probably played a little bit worse today than yesterday".

The 24-year-old, now ranked 23 in the world, won 84% of his first-serve points to triumph 6-3 6-3 in an hour and 14 minutes. 2 has finally reached the quarter finals of ATP Indian Wells for the first time in three years.

"It will be amusing that somebody other than Novak is still in", he said of his famous countryman. When asked about the potential for another clash with his rival, Federer said he was exciting for the opportunity to meet Nadal yet again.

"I was relieved I got through that one", Federer told reporters after defeating Edmund. Maybe because of the conditions, [it was] windier out there today.

Nadal will next face 12th seeded Russian Karen Khachanov who defeated big serving eighth seed American John Isner by 6-4, 7-6 (7-1).

Kecmanovic, ranked 130th in the world, had taken the first set against Yoshihito Nishioka 6-4 when the 74th-ranked Japanese retired because of injury.

The 13th seed will square off against France's Gael Monfils, a 6-0 6-2 victor over Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber, in the quarter-finals on Thursday. Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka, the world's top-ranked players, lost in straight sets.

Kecmanovic next plays 13th-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic, who beat Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4, 6-3.
