Australia's 2-year ODI losing streak ends in New Delhi

MS Dhoni,India vs Australia,Michael Clarke

It was a series to remember for Usman Khawaja in India, one player who previously never really fit the bill as a modern-day ODI boundary blaster.

He said it was the same in the three-match tie in January, despite India winning the final two matches and the series, best suggesting Australia has great confidence heading to the World Cup.

The series against Australia, who triumphed despite the absence of batsmen David Warner and Steve Smith, was the last time the Indian side will play together before then, with the players now due to join their IPL sides. A couple of spots are still up for grabs and even those are expected to be filled after the ongoing ODI series against Australia.

Asked if the current team members are aware about the competition for slots, Khawaja said, "I don't think anybody is really thinking about that".

It has been some turnaround for Khawaja, and you knew it meant so much to him when he emotionally celebrated his hundred that set the scene for Australia sewing up their first ODI series win in India in ten years.

"We're playing well right now".

Kohli himself flirted with the position in Mohali where he managed seven - his lowest of the series - and will return to his usual No. 3 where he has been most effective. We have got to keep our heads down, keep working hard.

Australia's players celebrate their win in the one day series against India in New Delhi, India, Wednesday, March 13, 2019. It was the first time that Australia bounced back from being 2-0 down to clinch a five-match ODI series.

Australian players celebrate the dismissal of India's Rohit Sharma during the final one day global cricket match between India and Australia in New Delhi, India, Wednesday, March 13, 2019. "Pete has batted beautifully, Maxi has always looked like he's going to get a lot of runs and been free-flowing". To be honest I am enjoying the wins more.

"From a personal point of view it's huge".

Khawaja shed eight kilograms last winter and was recalled to the one-day squad in January, ending two years in 50-over exile. To be here in India and winning this series, it's massive. We did that for four of the five games and India were too good in a close one in Nagpur.

A beleaguered Australia resurrected their one-day fortunes in the most dramatic fashion in India and the timing could not have been better for a team who will be defending their World Cup title in England and Wales later this year. "I am not looking too far ahead", he said.
