Cali, the reputed boss of the Gambino crime family, was gunned and mowed down Wednesday night outside his home on Staten Island.

A man has been arrested in New Jersey in connection with the killing of Francesco Cali, a reputed boss of a NY crime family, a broadcast new report said Saturday.

Police apprehended Anthony Comello in New Jersey on Saturday and expect to charge him with murdering Cali, the New York Police Department's Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea told a news conference.

Moments before Cali was gunned down in front of his home on Hilltop Terrace, the suspect - said by witnesses to be driving a blue pick-up truck - backed into Cali's parked vehicle, prompting the victim to exit his residence, according to police brass who held a press conference Thursday at NYPD headquarters. "Was the person paid to do it?"

Comello's fingerprints were found on Cali's license plate, sources said.

Surveillance video of the killing showed a man, allegedly Comello, crash his auto into Cali's parked SUV, drawing Cali outside in what might have been a ploy to lure him out of the house, Shea said.

Louisan learns his uncle was wounded in New Zealand mosque attacks
He sustained a head injury, which was not believed to be serious, and was kept in hospital for treatment, the police added. Following the attack, New Zealand's national security level was changed from "low" to "high".

Mr Comello's truck was issued a parking summons in Staten Island on the day of Cali's murder, Mr Shea said.

"We are very confident that he will be charged with the murder of Mr Cali", upon the suspect's handing over to NY, the official said.

It is unclear what Comello was doing in Brick Township, although staffers at Ocean County Scanner News say he has family in the town.

Cali was released after 16 months in federal prison in April 2009 for an extortion scheme.

Police say they are still investigating whether Cali's murder was a mob hit or whether he was killed for some other motive.

USA media reported that Cali's killing marked the first murder of a NY mob chieftain in 34 years since the death of Paul Castellano - another Gambino family boss - by order of John Gotti, who was known as Teflon Don.
