Following Friday's shooting at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern vowed to change the country's gun laws, though she didn't immediately specify how.

Ardern said 39 survivors remained hospitalized Saturday, with 11 critically wounded.

"There is one charge of murder brought at the moment, it is reasonable to assume that there will be others", the presiding judge noted.

Following the horrendous massacre, a 28-year-old Australian man, Brenton Tarrant, has been charged with murder.

Tarrant was arrested in a auto, which police said was carrying improvised explosive devices, 36 minutes after they were first called.

Residents pay their respects by placing flowers for the victims of the mosques attacks in Christchurch.

Before Friday's attack, New Zealand's deadliest shooting in modern history took place in 1990 in the small town of Aramoana, where a gunman killed 13 people following a dispute with a neighbor.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the shooter, an Australian native, had chosen to strike in New Zealand "because we represent diversity, kindness, compassion". "I am very sorry to miss your calls and text messages.I am really tired.please pray for my son, me and my daughter.I am just posting this video to show you that I am fully ok", said Wasseim Alsati, who was reportedly shot three times. Another two individuals are still in custody as the police continue to determine if they were involved in any way.

Tarrant was remanded without a plea until his next scheduled appearance in the South Island city's High Court on April 5.

Ardern added, "While work is being done as to the chain of events that led to both the holding of this gun licence, and the possession of these weapons, I can tell you one thing right now our gun laws will change".

"We appear to primarily be dealing with one primary perpetrator, but we want to make sure that we don't take anything for granted in ensuring New Zealanders' safety", Prime Minister Ardern said.

A gunman opened fire on worshippers in two mosques in Christchurch, killing 49 people.

Wearing a black scarf, Ardern hugged members of the Muslim community at a Christchurch refugee centre, saying she would ensure freedom of religion in New Zealand.

Ardern further differentiated herself from Trump's conduct following attacks on minority communities when she was asked whether she agreed with the president's assessment, shared on Friday, that white supremacy is not a growing global problem.

The Canterbury cricket team, one of six first-class sides in New Zealand's domestic Plunket Shield competition, also chose not to play their final round match in Wellington, which handed the title to Central Districts.

A second survivor, Faisal Sayed, said: "If that hadn't happened, many more would have died and I wouldn't be here now". Armed police were deployed at several locations in all cities, unusual in a country where levels of gun violence are low.

Mr Bainimarama also said his government will be working closely with authorities in New Zealand to monitor the welfare of Fijians in Christchurch.

Aziz said: "He gets into his vehicle and I just got the gun and threw it on his window like an arrow and blasted his window".
