Qualcomm Apple lawsuit: Jury awards $31 million in patent lawsuit to Qualcomm

Qualcomm scored a $31 million victory over Apple Friday for patent infringement

The infringement verdict covers iPhone 7, 8, and X - not the latest models. It also allows a smartphone to connect to the internet quickly after being powered on, according to Qualcomm officials. "But this does set a precedent that Qualcomm's IP is valuable, even the patents on elements of a phone that are not directly related to wireless standards".

But anorther legal decision involving Qualcomm and Apple was announced today.

On another front in the complex legal battle between two United States companies a federal judge in Southern California on Thursday issued a preliminary ruling that Qualcomm owes Apple almost a billion dollars in patent royalty rebate payments the chip maker is withholding, according to USA media reports. Billions of dollars are at stake in that trial, which goes to the heart of the licensing dispute between the tech giants. Another deals with graphics processing and battery life. Don Rosenberg, executive vice president and general counsel of Qualcomm said that "Apple has already offset the payment at issue under the agreement against royalties that were owed to Qualcomm".

In the trial that just concluded, the jury unanimously agreed with Qualcomm's contention that it should be paid $1.41 per iPhone relying on three of its patents.

Tyler 'Ninja' Blevins Reportedly Paid $1M by EA to Stream Apex Legends
The folks at Reuters were the first ones to find out about this deal and they were informed by one of their sources. In the case of chameleon-haired Twitch king Tyler "Ninja" Blevins, the number could be as high as $1 million.

Apple's contract factories, which under normal circumstances would pay Qualcomm for patent royalties owed on iPhones, have already withheld the almost $1 billion in payments to Qualcomm.

Qualcomm also suffered a setback with USA trade regulators who found that some iPhones infringed one of the San Diego-based company's patents but declined to bar their importation into the United States, citing the damage such a move would inflict on rival Intel Corp.

While the agreement worked for several years, Qualcomm chose to stop paying Apple when it found that the company was making "false and misleading" statements to the Korean Fair Trade Commission, which was investigating Qualcomm at the time over antitrust violations. Despite the award, when you consider the $1 billion that Qualcomm will have to rebate to Apple, the latter ended up approximately $969 million in the black.

"Next month's case on licensing [between Apple and Qualcomm] will affect billions of dollars in fees that Apple and most phone vendors pay Qualcomm", Greengart said. The trial concluded in January and parties are awaiting a decision.
