Netflix drops AirPlay support for Netflix, breaks iOS user hearts

Netflix iPhone

People will still be able to watch shows from the streaming service on their TVs by accessing the Netflix app directly, this will save Netflix millions as they won't have to pay Apple 30% of the generated revenue. As the story goes, the decision to discontinue the feature on iOS apps for both devices was due to "technical limitations".

This week Netflix rolled out an update to their iOS devices.

Judging from the official statement that Netflix has released to The Verge, it seems that the support for third-party devices is exactly the reason why the company made a decision to pull out the plug on AirPlay support. Please try again later.

As Cult of Mac noted, Netflix streaming via AirPlay - namely, using the feature to stream video from the iOS app to an Apple TV - has been supported since 2013, and there doesn't appear to have been any major revisions to AirPlay that would in and of themselves break Netflix compatibility.

Bartomeu wants Messi at Barcelona forever
It's more than what he does on the pitch - his relationship with Barca will last forever. I'm not surprised we got Barcelona 20 years on.

By accessing Netflix this way users can stream content on their iPhones and iPads to instantly play the content on their TVs.

The news comes after Apple last month announced Apple TV+, a subscription-based streaming service scheduled to launch this autumn. Experts say that they will struggle to get the service up in Australia due to competition from Stan, Foxtel and Fetch TV as well as Netflix. However, if AirPlay support is to be re-enabled, Apple and its third-party partners will need to work out a method for identifying devices over AirPlay so that Netflix can then optimize the content over AirPlay accordingly.

It seems that Netflix is anxious that AirPlay on 3rd party TVs will give a substandard experience when using Netflix. According to Netflix, AirPlay doesn't give proper identifiers that allow Netflix to determine what device it's being streamed to, and thus doesn't make sure that their "standard of quality for viewing is being met".
