Briefing: South Korea begins 5G rollout ahead of China, US

Three leading South Korean providers kicked their 5G networks into gear early in order to get a jump on their US counterparts

In the event, Verizon began rolling out its 5G services in Chicago and Minneapolis on Wednesday in the United States, a week ahead of schedule.

The superfast communications heralded by fifth-generation wireless technology will ultimately underpin everything from toasters to telephones, from electric cars to power grids. The ministry got the information that Verizon would move up the launch of its commercial 5G services to April 4.

The company said it was working with its memory-chip making affiliate SK Hynix to build a highly digitized and connected factory powered by 5G technology.

The Ministry of Science and ICT said South Korea's 5G networks went live at 11pm local time, which claimed the title of being the "world's first" set of commercialised 5G networks.

The US and South Korea are among several countries hoping for a share of 5G-related economic benefits estimated to be worth US$565bn globally by 2034, according to the Global System for Mobile Communications in London.

SK Telecom (SKT), the top mobile carrier in South Korea, said six selected customers including Kim Yuna and two EXO members, Baekhyun and Kai, received Samsung Electronics' 5G smartphones in a ceremony which was held at the company's head office in central Seoul at 11 p.m. Wednesday (1400 GMT).

As we all know, Samsung is a South Korean based hardware manufacturer and therefore, it should come as no surprise that the company's biggest fan base is in South Korea.

SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus began their 5G services at 11pm local time on Wednesday, two days ahead of scheduled date of April 5 in order to beat their USA counterparts.

Samsung was the first to unwrap a 5G phone in February when it unveiled the Galaxy S10 5G and a almost $2,000 folding smartphone, putting the world's top smartphone maker by volume in pole position in the 5G race, some analysts say.

It is expected that more than 3 million South Koreans will switch to 5G by the end of this year.

" Until today, we have installed 35,000 units of 5G base stations nationwide".

Sometimes it can offer 100-times faster speeds.

It started the services a week before the scheduled date.

None of South Korea's three network operators would say how much they have invested in 5G, but Seoul's economy minister Hong Nam-ki estimate it would be at least $2.6 billion this year alone.
