Chromium-Powered Edge Browser Now Available for Testing

The move particularly incensed Firefox developer Mozilla, which said that Microsoft was "officially giving up" and conceding to Google. The Canary and Dev Channels are both available now. The Canary Channel gets updated daily and typically might contain more software flaws.

Testers don't have to sign up for the program to use the Canary Channel or Dev Channel releases. There also will be a coming Beta Channel, where updates arrive every six weeks, and a coming Stable Channel.

"In these first builds we are very much focused on the fundamentals and have not yet included a wide range of feature and language support that will come later", writes Joe Belfiore, Corporate Vice President - Windows, Microsoft, in a blog post. This support was first implemented with Chromium 73 and is actively in development to further improve performance and battery life on these devices.

When it was announced in December, the Chromium-based Edge browser marked a landmark decision for Microsoft to abandon its own project and team with Google. If you haven't downloaded it yet, you can find more information about the release, here. Some changes will be more obvious to users. And if you install the browser and think "this looks like Chrome but with a blue E", you're not wrong...but that's ok. This build won't replace the version of Edge now installed, and Microsoft said it will continue to ship the non-Chromium version of Edge in upcoming Windows 10 preview builds for the time being. You can access the early version of Chromium-Edge on the Edge Insider website.

Edge now relies on its own rendering engine.

Microsoft added a feedback icon to the browser's main toolbar that you may use to inform the company of issues that you encounter while using the new Edge.

User Experience Differentiation Microsoft is still committed to differentiating the Edge browser based on the user experience or user interface.

As soon as you open the Store, you will get a notification on the saying you can install extensions on Microsoft Edge. By harnessing the open-source Chromium engine, Microsoft can offer Edge users better web compatibility.
