Windows 10 Now Makes Quick USB Drive Pulls Safer, With A Catch

But Microsoft has announced that this won't be the case starting with Windows version 1809.

As Betanews reports, Microsoft offers two policies regarding external storage media: Quick Removal and Better Performance.

If you are not ready for such things, though, you can change how Windows 10 handles your USB devices.

The difference, however, is that the Quick removal option is a safer way of extracting a removable storage device, versus the previous default of "Better performance".

Windows has long warned its users that removing external storage without ejecting it first can lead to data loss. Go to the "Policies" and select either Better Performance or Quick Removal. However, this requires the user to hit "Safely Remove Hardware" before pulling their storage device out to avoid risks of data loss or hardware damage.

Check the box next to "Enable write caching on this device". Your system will now default to Better performance when writing on USB drives.

Briefing: South Korea begins 5G rollout ahead of China, US
The ministry got the information that Verizon would move up the launch of its commercial 5G services to April 4. It started the services a week before the scheduled date.

Before the October 2018 Update, USB drives were defaulted to operate with "better performance", but now USB drives are automatically set to function with the "quick removal" setting, which allows you to safely remove the device without pressing anything in Windows 10.

You know, ever since the beginning of windows and USB you'd always get that message that the USB drive needs to be "safely removed" using the correct method in Windows, rather than just pulled out, this is changing.

If you use the "Better performance" policy, you must use the Safely Remove Hardware process to remove the device.

"The Safely Remove Hardware process protects the integrity of data on the device by making sure that all cached operations finish", Microsoft explains.

A new window will open, inside it, select the Policy tab and select the USB option which you want.

-When the device is connected, click on the "Start" option on the desktop followed by "File Explorer". Right click on the desired drive and select properties.
