5 candidates to replace Dave Joerger as head coach

Hall-of-famer Magic Johnson stepped down from his job as Lakers president earlier this week

Walton did what he could with a dysfunctional Lakers team and he still has plenty of time to prove that he can be a good National Basketball Association coach.

Shams Charania of the Athletic reports that the sides agreed to mutually part ways on Friday afternoon, two days after the Lakers' last game of the season.

The Lakers wished their former coach well when announcing his departure.

"I want to thank Jeanie Buss and the Buss family for giving me the opportunity to coach the Lakers", said former head coach Luke Walton. A season in which new-Laker LeBron James was expected to carry the team to their first playoff appearance since 2013.

Having been fourth in the Western Conference as of Christmas Day, injury to LeBron and subsequent off-court problems saw the Lakers end the year in 10th with a 37-45 record.

Facebook tweaks tools for remembering deceased loved ones

Lue joined the Cavs' coaching staff in 2014 as the team's associate head coach under head coach David Blatt.

"They're losing one of the best human beings in the NBA", Kerr said.

Lue, who won two championships with the Lakers as a player, coached James to a championship with the Cavaliers in 2016. "They're losing somebody who players believe in, players want to play for, but, again, he was dependent on circumstances just like all of us are, and I feel for Luke".

Lue was then sacked by Cleveland in October last year after starting the year 0-6, with his overall record reading 128-83.

Many executives, coaches and agents had speculated about Walton's job security since the start of the season not only because the Lakers had the makings of a flawed roster but also because Walton wasn't hired by Johnson and Pelinka.
