LILLEY: Ford's first budget boosts spending just slower than Libs

Ontario's Tories don't plan to balance books until after election

The Tories say they've managed to cut the deficit to $11.7 billion - a $3.3-billion reduction - since taking office last summer.

The budget does include a child care income tax credit to allow parents with children in daycare to receive up to $6,000 per child for those ages six and under, and up to $3,750 for ages 7 to 16.

Those who enjoy a boozy brunch or the prospect of drinking in a park will find something to smile at in the Ontario government's latest budget.

"We're hoping it will help low- and middle-income families", Walker says, "with up to 75 per cent of eligible childcare costs per year, including those for daycare, home-based care, camps, whatever they choose for the most part". Fedeli said $1 billion will go towards the spaces which could be operated by for-profit or not-for-profit groups. They also do restaurant inspection and keep track of immunizations.

The budget, which looked to expand the sale of alcohol and allow tailgating for sporting events, limited overall spending growth to an average annual rate of 1 percent between 2018-19 and 2023-24, much less than inflation.

Fedeli adds the government is well on their way to creating 15,000 long-term care beds and are "also committed to upgrading 15,000 long-term care beds".

There are 35 health units across the province which will be consolidate into 10. But big capital projects often feel free to governments, because capital spending is accounted for separately from operating costs - giving the PCs room for big announcements that boost debt but don't have an immediate impact on the deficit.

However, there was also a small group of students who made a decision to protest the protest as a few of them drove by with "Go Doug Ford" and "I (heart shape) Doug Ford" etched in the dirt on the side of their vehicles while honking their horns at the students. He did not provide any more details about that specific legislation.

Ontario has also started looking at how to constrain growth in public sector wages. It will also create a digital portal for apprenticeship opportunities.

The province, which has run deficits every year since 2008-09, pays more to borrow than some other major Canadian provinces, such as Quebec and British Columbia, that are running balanced budgets.

And as the next election comes into view, the temptation to spend a lot more - or lure voters with big tax cuts - will only grow. He adds to break down some of those barriers, the province is introducing a housing supply action plan to make it easier to develop the right mix of housing when needed and to develop rental housing.

Thus their projected deficits and reserve funds are far more credible than those of the Liberals, which were a joke, and Liberal deficits (or the NDP's) would have been higher had they won the election. "We are committed to providing two-way, all day service, every 15-minutes in core segments of the networks". And the province will loosen rules to allow licensed establishments to advertise "happy hour" promotions.

How do they claim that? The government spent $500,000 on a consultation on branding, but has a new contract for licence plate production that saves $4 million. Fedeli said it will shift 10 million transactions to digital platforms over the next five years.

In a statement, Ford said that the province has sent "a clear message to the world that Ontario is open for business".

"I'm very skeptical, based on the way that information has rolled out from this government when they're taking in generalities and cash infusions, which is contradicting everything they've said to this point and it's hard to read as to what this budget will mean until we see the specifics", Judge said.

Fedeli said they are also committed to streamlining the process for film and entertainment companies to take advantage of the five tax credits now offered by the province. "Ontario's rules and regulations for combative sports, such as MMA, boxing and kickboxing are out-of-date", said Fedeli.
