Com breach allowed hackers to read (some) emails for months

The hacker had access to email accounts from Outlook, MSN and Hotmail between January 1 and March 28, Microsoft said.

With access to our cloud data and PCs in many cases tied to our Microsoft accounts, which are also our Outlook.com email addresses, Microsoft owes it to users to be more clear about the compromise, and also how they will prevent it from recurring in the future.

According to Motherboard's source, hackers had access to this compromised support tool for at least six months, until Microsoft spotted the hack at the end of March.

"You should be careful when receiving any e-mails from any misleading domain name, any e-mail that requests personal information or payment, or any unsolicited request from an untrusted source", Microsoft told affected customers via email.

In an email that was previously sent to users, Microsoft said a hacker managed to swipe a support agent's login credentials, potentially exposing email addresses, subject lines, and other information, but not the actual contents of any emails. It added that limited parts of Outlook users' emails may, as a effect, have been compromised too.

Virat also took to Twitter and shared a candid moment with Chhetri and said that it was good to have the Indian captain around. However, Sourav Ganguly , former India captain, has suggested that consistency leads to success and not the other way around.

The company did say that potential hackers could only read full email content for about 6% of affected Outlook users.

"Upon awareness of this issue, Microsoft immediately disabled the compromised credentials, prohibiting their use for any further unauthorized access", the company said.

Microsoft sent a warning to Outlook users detailing a hack that lasted from January 1 to March 28.

The firm warned in its e-mail that users might receive more spam and phishing e-mails as a result of the incident, and urged users not to click on links from e-mail addresses they did not recognise. The company noted that the contents of emails or attachments were not accessed. Out of an abundance of caution, however, customers whose inboxes were left exposed to the intruder will be getting additional "detection and monitoring" on their email accounts.
